The Passing of Lucas “Masterpieces” Moripe: A Tribute to a Football Legend

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of the legendary Lucas “Masterpieces” Moripe, known affectionately as ‘Modimo wa bolo’. Moripe, who had been struggling with an illness for some time, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday night. His death marks the end of an era for South African football, as he was a true icon of the game.

A Football Career That Left a Mark

Lucas Moripe’s football journey began in 1971 with Pretoria Callies, where he showcased his incredible talent as a midfielder. Over the years, his skill and vision on the ball earned him a place in the hearts of fans across the country. In 1981, Moripe made a move to Orlando Pirates, another of South Africa’s premier football clubs. During his playing days, he was known for his artistry in the midfield, earning a reputation as a maestro who could control the game.

Unfortunately, his career was cut short by injuries, and Moripe retired from professional football earlier than he might have hoped. However, his legacy lived on, not only in the hearts of those who watched him play but also in the honors bestowed upon him.

### Honoring Moripe’s Legacy

In recognition of his contributions to football, Moripe was celebrated even during his lifetime. In Atteridgeville, a street was named after him as a testament to his influence. The greatest honor came in 2010 when the Atteridgeville Super Stadium, a venue often used by teams like Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United, was renamed the Lucas ‘Masterpieces’ Moripe Stadium. The stadium now serves as a lasting tribute to the man whose career brought joy to so many.

### A Heartfelt Tribute from the Football Community

The news of Moripe’s passing was confirmed by Jacob “Buddha” Mathathe, president of the South African Masters & Legends Football Association, as well as a member of the South African Football Association (Safa NEC). Mathathe shared his condolences, describing Moripe as an “iconic and legendary” figure who had made a significant impact on South African football. He expressed his heartfelt sympathy to Moripe’s family and loved ones, praying for strength and comfort during this difficult time

Mathathe also took the opportunity to reflect on the struggles faced by former professional football players, many of whom, like Moripe, had contributed greatly to the development of the sport in South Africa. He called for greater attention to be given to the socio-economic challenges facing retired players, emphasizing the need for continued advocacy on their behalf.

### A Nation Mourns

The passing of Lucas “Masterpieces” Moripe leaves a void in South African football that will be felt for years to come. Fans and former teammates alike have expressed their sorrow at his death, remembering him not just for his skill on the field, but for his humility and commitment to the game.

As the football community comes together to honor his memory, we join in extending our deepest condolences to Moripe’s family, friends, and all those who were touched by his legendary career. May his soul rest in peace.
