Rea Vaya Bus Services Suspended After Deadly Shooting Attacks

**Two Bus Drivers Killed in Separate Incidents in Soweto**

Rea Vaya bus services have been suspended indefinitely following two fatal shooting incidents involving bus drivers in Soweto. The tragic events unfolded on the night of February 3, leaving passengers stranded and authorities investigating the violent attacks.

**Details of the Shootings**

According to Gauteng Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the first incident occurred when a bus driver was shot while stopped at a traffic light on Wildchestnut Street in Protea Glen. Unknown assailants approached the bus and opened fire, fatally wounding the driver before fleeing the scene.

Shortly after, a second shooting took place on Tshithuthune Street in Mapetla. An eyewitness reported hearing gunshots and seeking cover. When the gunfire ceased, the witness discovered that another Rea Vaya driver had been shot and killed.

In an attempt to control the bus after the attack, the eyewitness tried to steer it but crashed into a wall. Fortunately, no passengers were harmed in the incident.

**Investigation Underway**

The police have launched a murder investigation, though the motive behind the attacks remains unclear. Authorities are actively pursuing all possible leads to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

**Impact on Commuters**

As a safety measure, Rea Vaya has decided to halt operations until further notice. Management has urged passengers to use alternative transport while investigations continue. This suspension is expected to cause major disruptions for commuters who depend on the bus service for their daily travel to work and school.

Passengers have been advised to stay updated on the latest developments by checking the Rea Vaya website and social media platforms.

## **Community Concerns and Rewards for Information**

The violent attacks have raised concerns about the safety of public transport workers and commuters in Soweto. In response, city officials have promised to enhance security measures. Additionally, the Johannesburg MMC for Transport has offered a R100,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest of the suspects involved in the murders.

## **Authorities Call for Public Assistance**

Law enforcement agencies are urging anyone with information about the attacks to come forward and assist in the investigation. The public can report tips anonymously through designated police hotlines.

The tragic loss of two bus drivers has left a community in mourning and a city searching for answers. Until the situation is resolved, Soweto commuters will need to seek alternative transport options, hoping for a swift resolution to the crisis.
