‘I’m going to Paris’: Mama Joy reacts to Gayton’s superfan snub?
Did superfan Mama Joy defiantly react to newly-appointed Minister of Sports Gayton McKenzie’s plans to stop her sponsored trips?
Mama Joy—real name Joy Chauke—has casually responded to claims that newly-appointed Minister of Sport Gayton McKenzie has halted all sponsored superfan trips to events abroad, including the upcoming Olympics.
This comes just hours after the sports supporter posted an image of herself with a sign that claimed she would be supporting the South African national Olympic team in Paris later this month.
Last month, Chauke and now-suspended DA MP Renaldo Gouws were embroiled in an X spat over the former’s desire to attend the Summer Olympics, which will take place from 26 July to 11 August in Paris, France.
GAYTON MCKENZIE GIVES RED CARD TO SUPERFANS
Without naming Mama Joy, Gayton McKenzie revealed that the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture would be halting sponsored trips to sports supporters.
He tweeted, “I have stopped all trips for super fans. We have athletes and artists who are struggling to raise money to attend sporting events and exhibitions. How do we justify paying for fans? We shall no longer be paying for these trips and will use that money where it’s needed the most.”
Gayton also vowed to release the department’s beneficiaries’ names and the amount of money they had received.
He added: “The time where only a select connected few benefits is over.”
MAMA JOY DEFIANTLY REACTS?
On her X account, Mama Joy posted pictures of her supporting the South African Olympic team. The post came just minutes after Gayton Mckenzie threatened to name and shame Department of Sports, Arts and Culture beneficiaries.
“Good luck, Team SA, Olympics Paris 2024”, Chauke tweeted.
In one picture, Chauke posed with South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) President Barry Hendricks. “I’m going to Paris #formycountry”,” read a sign she held up”.

When one tweep mentioned Gayton’s promise and called for the public to “check up on Mama Joy,” she responded: “I’m fine, thank you.”

The sports fan also somewhat sarcastically thanked a tweep who claimed that their tax money was paying for her trips abroad.
Sadly, I can’t go as I am working to pay for her to go!

Mama Joy also retweeted tweets of support, one of whom called her “South Africa’s mascot.”
Last month, Chauke hinted that she planned to attend the Summer Olympics. She tweeted: “I can’t wait, guys, Olympics in Paris.” However, she did not add if she would be paying for the trip herself or if her trip abroad had been sponsored.
SHOULD THE DEPARTMENT OF SPORTS, ARTS AND CULTURE SPONSOR MAMA JOY’S TRIP TO THE OLYMPICS?
