KATLEGO Ranaka was supposed to finish her diploma on Friday, 31 January.
The daughter of Generations: The Legacy actress Manaka Ranaka was studying animal production at the Ekurhuleni Agricultural College and was set to complete her coursework on Friday, 31 January.
This was shared during her memorial service held at the San Salvador Catholic Church in Leondale, Ekurhuleni, on Thursday, 30 January.
Katlego passed away on Thursday, 23 January, at the age of 24.
Mr Baloyi, spokesperson for Ekurhuleni Agricultural College, along with Katlego’s classmates, facilitator, and college management expressed their sorrow
“The school remembers her as an actively participating student. She was a member of the representative committee and a natural-born leader. She was doing animal production and was going to finish her third-year diploma tomorrow, Friday, 31 January.
“Her classmates are finishing tomorrow at school. That makes the timing of the passing more painful to us as a college. Our mandate and business are to train students to make an impact in the South African community. We want them to make a big difference. So, the sudden passing is sad,” Mr Baloyi said.
He described her as a good student.
“She participated in school tours where she was representing the college. She was one of the faces of the college. She used to give career guidance to high school learners, motivating them to get into agriculture. Her facilitators say she possessed a great skill that most students didn’t have—the ability to work with anybody. I personally worked with Kat for the past three years. As I worked with her closely, I realised she was a good mother. The other thing I noticed: she was very respectful and humble,” he said.
Yvonne Chaka Chaka, who hired Katlego and her cousin Thando Ranaka at her radio station WOMan Radio, was also at the funeral.
She described her as a respectful child
“Today is a very sad day, but on the other hand, we need to celebrate the short life that little KG lived. To the three Ranaka girls (Dineo, Manaka, and Nompumelelo), I want to say to you, this is the time for you to hold hands, love one another and cherish one another.
“I also want to thank the two brothers (Ranaka and Mzingisi). Every weekend, they brought them to WOMan Radio. Manaka, it’s not nice to lose a daughter. We always thought our kids would be the ones to bury us, but it’s not like that. God’s will has happened. I know that Thando will feel lonely without her cousin because they were like twins. I want to say, hang in there. I’m very sorry that she didn’t get to 30, but Manaka did a good job. An amazing humble, respectful, loving, and very kind,” she said.
Dineo Ranaka said the family hadn’t experienced death the way they did with Katlego

“Let’s be strong. We’ve lost her in the flesh but we’ve gained an angel. This is the first time death has visited us so closely. We’ve buried a lot of family members, but we have never been this close to death. Never,” she said.
Katlego’s dad, Sipho Lekaba, was also present

“She was my firstborn, I’ll never have a firstborn again. My angel. Right now, I have Mpho (Katlego’s son) and Mpho is my name; he was named after me. He’s a duplicate of me. Thank you, Manaka, for being a queen in my life. You taught me a lot. You taught me love and gave me a beautiful woman who gave me a grandchild,” he said.
The funeral will be on Saturday, 1 February, at the San Salvador Catholic Church in Leondale.
