Thabang Tabane (45) from Mamelodi West, Tshwane, will be laid to rest at B3 Cemetery in Mamelodi West on Saturday, 8 February.
The body of Thabang has arrived at the Mamelodi Community Hall in Tshwane, where the funeral service will proceed on Saturday, 8 February 2025, in the morning.
Thabang died after a short illness on Wednesday, 29 January 2025.
Thabang is the son of jazz icon and Malombo band founder Dr Philip Tabane. Thabang was an African Jazz artist. Abbey Cindi (85), who worked with Thabang’s father at Malombo, said he is still shocked about the sudden death of Thabang.
“It’s unbelievable that he is gone. He is too young. We were looking forward for his replacement of his father,” he said.

He mentioned that he performed with him in the Malombo Jazz Makers’ celebration of 60 years of existence at the Malombo Theatre at Pretoria State Theatre in Tshwane on 20 September 2024. He said that it was the first and last gig to work with Thabang. He wanted to work with him again in the future.
“In Thabang, I saw his father. It was lovely working with him. His father was extremely talented,” he said.

Cindi said he had never heard that he was ill.
“It was difficult to view his body on Friday, 7 February, because I was scared to see that indeed he is gone and that he will remind me of his father,” he said.
Thabang’s mkhulu, Daniel Kabini (93), said his death came so soon, and it was shocking.
“We will miss Thabang. He was following the footsteps of his father, but in terms of talent, his father was extraordinarily gifted,” he said.
Kabini said after hearing the sad news, he immediately visited the family.
He mentioned that Thabang always reminded him of his father.
Traditional African Jazz artist Boipelo Matlhare mentioned that a part of us has left because the spirit Thabang carried and represented was larger than life. He had a unique and rare tone.
