Viewers love actress’ Soft Life!
KANYI Nokwe is the name on everybody’s lips.
The actress is currently on Soft Life on Showmax, and people rave about her acting every week.
The 33-year-old actress, born in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape, and raised in Edenvale, Ekurhuleni, portrays Lady T on the show.
She spoke to Daily Sun about her journey in acting and getting where she is now.
“I studied classical music at the National School of Arts (NSA) and went to do my BTech in musical theatre at the Tshwane University of Technology. My mother tells me that when I was about four years old, I would always watch music videos of Brenda Fassie, Boom Shaka and Janet Jackson, and I’d turn to the TV and tell my mum I wanted to do that.
“I’m a product of a mum who believed in me. She put me in ballet classes when I was about five years old. When I was seven years old, a teacher saw that I had a singing talent. When I was about 12 years old, another teacher saw that I had a talent for acting. He encouraged me to apply and audition for the NSA. So, I’m the product of a working government system,” she said.
Kanyi started in theatre, which landed her a prestigious nomination, and TV ads until she got her first TV role.
“When I graduated, I went to perform and secured a title lead Janice Honeyman’s Pantomine as Pinocchio. I was nominated for a Naledi Award for the Pantomine for Breakthrough Arts Best Newcomer in 2017 for that role. I also did a lot of TV commercials from 2015 until today.
“I also went on to do Divas of Kofifi, where I told the story of mam Dorothy Masuku. I performed with her, Thandi Klassen and Abigail Kubeka. In 2022, I got my first breakout lead role, which was Nomzamo on Lavish. In 2023, I went on to play Nomasomi,” she said.
media platforms and said she’s been seeing the love.
“To be honest, Lady T is my breakout role because she’s the one to receive recognition. I’m grateful for the acknowledgement and support. And knowing that it’s taken me such a long time to get here, it’s proof that hard work and integrity take you somewhere,” she said.
There are three more episodes of Soft Life, and Kanyi said it’s about to go down.
“Viewers will see Owami (Zizipho Buti) receiving the repercussions of the actions. The ladies at GFE will also be in that boat.”
Kanyi is also a singer, and she said she hopes to drop new music this year.
“In 2019, I released my debut single titled Brand New. This year I’d like to release music and create something for my beautiful audience,” she said.
