Veteran actress Connie Chiume has died..

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of acclaimed actress Connie Chiume, who died today, August 6, 2024, at the age of 71. The news was confirmed by her family through a heartfelt statement on her Instagram page, which expressed their profound grief and requested privacy during this difficult time. Connie, born Connie Temweka Gabisile Chiume (née Maluleka) on June 5, 1952, in Welkom, South Africa, leaves behind a rich legacy through her influential contributions to cinema and television.

Connie Chiume was not only a talented actress and filmmaker but also a powerful voice in the South African entertainment industry. She is best known for her captivating performances in significant film roles, such as her appearances in Black Panther, Black Is King, and Blessers. On television, her remarkable talent shone through in popular series like Zone 14, Rhythm City, and Gomora, where she made indelible marks on the hearts of audiences.

Chiume’s roots trace back to a distinct cultural heritage. Her father, Wright Tadeyo Chiume, was from Usisya, Nkhata Bay in Malawi, and her mother, MaNdlovu, hailed from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. This blend of backgrounds contributed to her unique perspective as an artist. Her cousin, Ephraim Mganda Chiume, has served as a prominent politician in Malawi, showcasing the family’s dedication to both the arts and public service.

Connie’s journey into acting began on the stage, where she showcased her talents in productions such as Porgy and Bess, Ipi Ntombi, and Little Shop of Horrors. Upon her return to South Africa, she quickly gained recognition for her role as Thembi in the 1989 series Inkom’ Edla Yodwa and later in the film Warriors from Hell. In 2000, her exceptional skills were acknowledged when she won the award for Best Actress in a Drama Series at the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTA).

Throughout her career, Connie Chiume received numerous accolades and nominations. She starred in the stage productions of You Strike The Woman and You Strike The Rock in 2006 and gained further prominence through her role as Stella Moloi in the SABC1 drama series Zone 14 from 2007 to 2015, winning another SAFTA and the Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama.

Her roles in blockbuster films like Black Panther and Black Is King highlight her place in the global cinematic landscape. In Black Panther, she portrayed the Mining Tribe Elder, bringing depth and dignity to her character, which resonated with audiences worldwide.

In 2020, Chiume continued to capture the audience’s hearts as Mam’Sonto Molefe in the drama series Gomora and appeared in Black Is King, further solidifying her status as a versatile and impactful actress. Her nomination for a Feather Award in October 2020 is a testament to her ongoing influence and popularity in the industry.
