This permanent position focuses on maintaining the visual and functional appeal of the campus grounds, gardens, sports fields (including cricket pitches), and associated facilities. The successful candidate will be responsible for routine outdoor maintenance, landscaping, lawn care, irrigation, pest control, and assisting in sporting ground preparations.

Tasks

Garden & Grounds – Lawn Care & Sports Field Maintenance:

Mowing lawns and fields
Preparing and fertilizing soil for planting
Operating mowers, sprayers, blowers, and other tools
Raking leaves, sweeping walkways, and removing debris
Pruning shrubs and removing dead branches
General trash and litter removal
Maintaining parking lots, fountains, and planters
Preparing cricket pitches and turf for sporting events

Garden & Grounds – Plant Maintenance:

Pruning, trimming, watering trees, shrubs, and hedges
Designing and maintaining specialty gardens
Maintaining nursery plants and applying fertilizers
Applying insecticides and managing fire ant control
Operating irrigation systems and watering tools

Tools and Equipment Safety:

Conducting routine equipment maintenance
Assisting in sporting ground setups
Repairing irrigation systems and garden tools
Cleaning outdoor storage and maintaining landscaping equipment

Landscaping Duties:

Implementing landscaping plans
Decorating outdoor spaces with greenery
Mixing and pouring cement for garden borders
Providing information about landscaping services

Health and Safety Compliance:

Handling tools and materials safely
Cleaning and maintaining a safe work environment
Following safety procedures and wearing PPE
Upholding environmental safety standards

UJ Policy Compliance:

Adhering to institutional guidelines
Demonstrating UJ core values in everyday duties

Qualifications

Minimum Educational Requirement: Grade 12 (NQF 4)
Recommended: Valid Code 8 driver’s license

Experience

Minimum: 3 years of hands-on experience in garden and grounds maintenance
Proven understanding of techniques and processes involved in maintaining sports fields and cricket pitches
Ability to perform physically demanding tasks
Experience using power tools, gardening equipment, and irrigation systems
