Introduction
uMngeni-uThukela Water (UUW) Learnerships 2025 uMngeni-uThukela Water (UUW), through its Training and Development Department in collaboration with the Operations Division, is proud to announce the launch of its Water & Waste Water Treatment Learnership Programme for the 2025 – 2026 intake. This one-year programme provides an opportunity for unemployed matriculants to obtain a National Certificate in Water and Waste Water Treatment (NQF Level 2).
As one of South Africa’s leading bulk water service providers, UUW is committed to developing technical skills within the communities it serves. The programme is specifically targeted at candidates residing in deep rural areas within the uMkhanyakude and uMzinto District Municipalities.

Job Description
This learnership is aimed at equipping candidates with theoretical and practical knowledge in water and wastewater treatment. Candidates will receive full-time training that includes:
- Structured theoretical classroom training
- Hands-on practical experience at UUW’s North East Region Water Treatment Plants
- Completion of a Portfolio of Evidence (POE) as part of the qualification requirements
Trainees will be placed at Richards Bay and Jozini Water Treatment Plants, where they will gain vital real-world experience in water operations.
This comprehensive programme will prepare learners for possible future employment within the water services sector, including public utilities, municipal water departments, and water boards.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following baseline requirements to be considered:
- Must be unemployed
- Must have completed Matric (Grade 12) with Mathematics and Physical Science
- Must be a South African citizen with a valid South African ID document
- Must be between the ages of 18 and 35 years
- Must reside in rural areas within uMkhanyakude District or uMzinto District Municipality
- Applicants must not hold any post-matric qualification at NQF Level 5 or above
- People living with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply
Role Responsibility
Selected candidates will be responsible for:
- Attending all theoretical and practical sessions as per the learnership schedule
- Participating in water and wastewater treatment activities under supervision
- Completing and submitting the Portfolio of Evidence (POE)
- Adhering to workplace policies and safety protocols at the water treatment plants
- Demonstrating commitment, punctuality, and a willingness to learn

Position Summary
The uMngeni-uThukela Water Learnership Programme is more than a qualification; it is a pipeline for nurturing the next generation of skilled water technicians in KwaZulu-Natal. This initiative forms part of UUW’s broader strategy to empower rural communities through education and employment opportunities.
Through this programme, twenty successful candidates will receive an NQF Level 2 qualification that meets the national requirements for entry-level positions in the water treatment sector. While this programme does not guarantee employment upon completion, it provides a critical stepping stone into the water industry and related public sector careers.
