Tyla Celebrates Five Nominations at the South African Music Awards
22-year-old singer and dancer, Tyla currently on a winning streak, has just received five nominations at the South African Music Awards (Samas).
The nominees were announced on Thursday, 26 September, at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Gauteng.
Tyla is up for Sampra Album of the Year, Ukhozi FM Female Artist of the Year, Santam Newcomer of the Year, Best Pop Album, and Best Collaboration for Water with Travis Scott.
This comes as Tyla, whose real name is Tyla Laura Seethal, won awards from the MTV VMAs, BET Awards, Basadi In Music Awards, CCI Industry Awards, and Metro FM Awards, to name a few, in just the past year.
Just after Tyla was 2023’s king of nominations, Kabza De Small who bagged six nominations last year.
This year, however, he’s got only three nominations for Album of the Year and Motsweding FM Best Amapiano Album for Isimo and Radio 2000 Duo/Group of the Year.
Umkhokha: The Curse actor Mbuso Khoza also bagged three nominations for Best Produced Album, Best Traditional Music Album, and Best Engineered Album for Shaka iLembe Soundtrack Album Volume 2 (Original Music from the Shaka iLembe TV Series).
In the Ukhozi FM Female Artist of the Year category, Tyla is up against Brenda Mtambo for Sane, Lwah Ndlunkulu for Imizwa, Lordkez for Testament, and Xolly Mncwango for Unusual.
Other nominees include Priddy Ugly for Dust, Kelvin Momo for Kurhula, Ugatsheni for Uyihlo noNyoko, Daliwonga for Dali Dali, and De Mthuda for Baba Yaga in the Lesedi FM Male Artist of the Year.
The nominees for Best Contemporary Faith Music Album are The Gift Vol.1 by Brenden Praise, Izililo by We Will Worship, Unusual by Xolly Mncwango, We Bow Down by 3C Live, and Come To Jesus (Live In Bryanston, 2022) by The Fellowship With Pastor Namba.

The nominees for Best Maskandi Album are National Anthem by Inkos’yamagcokama, Uber Driver by Sminofu, Amakhothangqoko by Mthandeni SK, Uyihlo noNyoko by Ugatsheni, and Isivulwe Yonke by Ntencane.
Asante II by Morda and Thakzin, Permanent Music 3 by Dlala Thukzin, The Star Is Reborn by Zakes Bantwini, Clickbait by DBN Gogo, and Reputation by Sculptured Music are up for Best Dance Album.
The nominations event was hosted by radio and TV personality Luthando “Lootlove” Shosha.

Nhlanhla Sibisi, CEO of the Recording Industry of South Africa (Risa), said this year’s nominees excited him.
