Patient Dies in Isolation Ward Blaze
A tragic fire at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital in South Africa claimed the life of a patient on Tuesday night. Health officials reported that the fire broke out in an isolation ward during visiting hours.

Cause of the Fire
According to Nathi Oliphant from the health department, the fire started when a patient ignited a cigarette lighter while wearing an oxygen mask. The oxygen supply, connected to the main line, fueled the fire, which was contained within the patient’s single-bed cubicle.

Staff Response and Fire Containment
Another patient in the ward noticed the fire and immediately alerted the nursing staff. Hospital personnel quickly responded, using fire extinguishers and water while the sprinklers activated to help control the flames.

“The ward was filled with smoke, but the staff acted swiftly to extinguish the fire,” Oliphant said.

Fatal Consequences
Despite the rapid response, the 39-year-old patient who allegedly caused the fire suffered severe burns. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries. Fortunately, no other patients or staff members were harmed. However, as a precaution, some patients were moved to other medical wards.

Hospital and Public Reaction
Hospital management has yet to comment on whether additional safety measures will be implemented following the incident. The tragedy raises concerns about patient safety, particularly in areas where oxygen is in use.
