Tragedy Strikes: Young Officer Killed in Eastern Cape

**Tragic Incident on New Year’s Eve**

In a devastating incident, Constable Callan Andrews, a 29-year-old police officer, was shot and killed while on duty in Gelvandale, Eastern Cape, on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2024. The young constable’s life was tragically cut short during what should have been a routine patrol.

**Routine Patrol Turns Fatal**
According to Lieutenant-Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, the tragic event unfolded around 5:35 PM. Two officers were conducting a routine patrol in Gelvandale when their vehicle stalled on Kobus Road, Helenvale. While nearby residents helped restart the vehicle, a gunshot suddenly rang out, striking Constable Andrews in the head. Despite efforts to save his life, Andrews succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

In a further blow, Andrews’ service firearm was discovered missing, raising suspicions of foul play and prompting a deeper investigation. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) has since taken over the case.

**Investigation Underway**
Lieutenant-Colonel Mawisa confirmed that no arrests had been made yet. “An investigation is underway, and the DPCI is examining all leads,” she stated.

**Condemnation of the Attack**
Lieutenant-General Nomthetheleli Mene, the provincial police commissioner, expressed her outrage at the killing and called on the community to assist in bringing the perpetrators to justice. “The recent killing of a police constable is deeply condemned. We urge the public to provide any information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible,” she said.

**Community and Political Reaction**
The senseless murder has drawn widespread condemnation. DA provincial legislator Yusuf Cassim expressed his sorrow and frustration over the incident. “We cannot allow the tragic and brutal killing of a police officer with a bright future to become just another statistic,” he said.

Cassim also highlighted the ongoing crime crisis in the Northern Areas and Nelson Mandela Bay, attributing it to inadequate police resources. “For years, crime in the Northern Areas has spiraled out of control, claiming countless innocent lives,” he stated.

To expedite justice, Cassim announced that he had written to authorities, requesting a substantial reward for information leading to the identification and conviction of the assailants.

**Call for Justice**
This tragic loss has once again highlighted the challenges faced by law enforcement officers in high-crime areas. The killing of Constable Andrews serves as a grim reminder of the dangers officers face daily while striving to protect their communities. Authorities and residents alike are urged to work together to combat the rising tide of crime and ensure that justice is served for Andrews and his grieving family.
