Tragedy Strikes as Ekuthuleni Primary School Principal Shot Dead

The Ekuthuleni Primary School community in Kraaifontein, Cape Town, is reeling in shock following the tragic murder of its principal. The 54-year-old educator was fatally shot outside the school gates on the morning of Thursday, 23 January, leaving students, staff, and parents devastated.

A Day of Tragedy

The horrifying incident unfolded as children and teachers arrived for the day. Witnesses reported that the principal and another staff member were driving into the school premises when three armed men approached their white Mahindra vehicle and opened fire. The principal was killed instantly, while the accompanying teacher sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

The attack sent shockwaves through the school community, with parents scrambling to take their children home. One parent shared their fear:

“Children and parents ran for cover as bullets were flying at the school gate. It was a terrifying scene. My child was crying and traumatized, so I had to take her home.”

#### Police Investigations Underway

Captain Frederick van Wyk, spokesperson for the police, confirmed that detectives from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit were investigating the case. Authorities are combing the scene for evidence and have appealed to the public for assistance in identifying the suspects.

“At around 7 am, three unidentified males approached the victim’s vehicle at the school entrance and opened fire. The suspects fled the scene in an unknown vehicle,” said Van Wyk.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Detective Colonel Eddie Clark at 082 469 1531 or CrimeStop at 08600 10111.

#### Support and Condolences

Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier expressed his shock and sadness over the attack.

“This is a terrible tragedy for the school and community. We extend our deepest condolences to the principal’s family and loved ones. Our district team is on the ground providing support to staff and learners during this difficult time,” said Maynier.

The MEC assured the public that the police would leave no stone unturned in apprehending the perpetrators.

Anroux Marais, MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety, echoed Maynier’s sentiments and emphasized the importance of justice.

“This case is receiving the highest priority. My deepest condolences go to the family and the school community. I trust the detectives working on this case will bring the culprits to justice,” Marais stated.

#### Community in Mourning

The murder of the principal has left the Ekuthuleni Primary School and the wider community in mourning. As students, teachers, and parents grapple with the trauma, authorities have pledged to ensure safety and justice.

The brutal attack has also raised concerns about security in schools, prompting calls for enhanced measures to protect educators and learners alike.
