Suspected Crocodile Attack Claims Man’s Life at Mogalakwena River

Maleboho police responded to a tragic incident involving a drowning and a suspected crocodile attack at Mogalakwena River in Arrie Village on **February 7, 2025, at approximately 09:00 AM**.

**Discovery of the Body**

Upon arrival at the scene, police officers were directed by concerned members of the Arrie Village community to the lifeless body of an African male, which was still floating in the river.

## **Investigation and Retrieval**

A preliminary investigation indicated that the deceased had been last seen fishing in the same area before his disappearance. Authorities suspect that he was attacked by crocodiles, as the river is known to be infested with these dangerous reptiles. The **Provincial Search and Rescue Team** was immediately called to the scene, and they managed to retrieve the body from the water.

## **Horrific Injuries and Confirmation of Death**

Upon retrieval, it was discovered that the body had sustained severe injuries, with **both hands and the stomach missing**, further supporting the likelihood of a crocodile attack. Emergency medical personnel (EMS) arrived on the scene and officially declared the man deceased.

## **Identity of the Deceased**

The victim was later identified as **Phuthi Oscar Serumula**, a resident of **Arrie Village in Maleboho**. Following the discovery, police registered an **inquest case** for further investigation.

## **Warning to the Public**

Authorities have issued a **stern warning** to residents, urging them to avoid **swimming, fishing, or crossing** rivers known to be infested with crocodiles. Engaging in such activities poses a **serious risk to life**, and officials are emphasizing the need for caution to **prevent further fatalities**.

This tragic incident serves as a **harsh reminder** of the dangers posed by crocodile-infested waters, and authorities are calling on the community to **prioritize safety** when near such environments.
