Seven Dead in Heartbreaking Crash on N4 Highway

The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison has confirmed a devastating accident on the N4 Toll Road that claimed the lives of seven people, including a toddler. The collision, involving two sedans, occurred between Belfast and Wonderfontein on December 31, 2024, at approximately 14:00.

### **Details of the Crash**
Preliminary reports suggest that one of the vehicles lost control, veered off its lane, and collided head-on with an oncoming sedan. The impact resulted in a tragic loss of life, with five victims in one car and two in the other, including both drivers. Among the deceased was a toddler believed to be around two years old.

A single survivor, suffering serious injuries, was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Investigations into the accident are underway, though reckless and negligent driving have not been ruled out as potential causes.

**Government’s Reaction and Appeal**
Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security, and Liaison, Mr. Jackie Macie, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. He reiterated the importance of cautious and responsible driving, particularly on major routes like the N4 Toll Road.

ā€œIt is regrettable to lose lives in crashes that are mostly avoidable if caution is applied,ā€ said Macie. He emphasized the department’s ongoing efforts to improve road safety through enhanced plans and regulations but stressed that motorists must also play their part.

Macie extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured individual a speedy recovery.

### **Road Safety a Priority**
The N4 Toll Road is one of the region’s busiest and most critical routes. Authorities have been working to implement safety measures, including increased patrols and stricter enforcement of traffic laws. However, officials continue to face challenges as reckless driving and non-compliance with traffic regulations persist.

The MEC highlighted the need for collective responsibility, urging drivers to adhere to speed limits, avoid distracted driving, and remain vigilant, especially during peak travel seasons.

### **Community Impact**
This tragic incident is a stark reminder of the human cost of road accidents. The loss of seven lives, including a young child, underscores the importance of ongoing awareness campaigns and stricter law enforcement to prevent such tragedies.

### **Investigation Underway**
Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. Findings from the investigation will inform future safety measures and help prevent similar incidents.

**Conclusion**
The Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison continues to advocate for road safety and appeals to all road users to prioritize caution. As communities mourn the loss of loved ones, this tragedy serves as a call for greater responsibility on South Africa’s roads.
