Rhema Bible Church Mourns the Loss of Founder Ray McCauley, 75

South African evangelical pastor Ray McCauley, the founder of Rhema Bible Church, has passed away at the age of 75. His family confirmed his peaceful death in a heartfelt statement, revealing that McCauley passed on surrounded by his loved ones at his home.

“It is with deep sorrow and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Pastor Ray McCauley, founder of Rhema Bible Church, an evangelical leader,” said his son Joshua McCauley, who is now the senior pastor of the church. The family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of prayers and support during this difficult time and promised further details about memorial arrangements would be shared soon.

McCauley was an iconic figure in South Africa’s religious landscape, having established the Rhema Bible Church in 1979. Under his leadership, the church became one of the largest and most influential in the country, boasting over 45,000 members. His influence extended beyond the pulpit, with McCauley playing a key role in South Africa’s socio-political scene, particularly during the presidency of Jacob Zuma. During this period, McCauley founded the National Interfaith Leadership Council, often referred to as Zuma’s “God Squad” due to its close ties with the president.

Despite stepping back from active church duties in his later years due to health concerns, McCauley remained deeply committed to his faith and the ministry. In 2022, he handed over the leadership of the church to his son, Pastor Joshua McCauley.

Beyond his religious contributions, McCauley had a colorful background. He was a champion bodybuilder and even represented South Africa on the global stage, earning the title of Mr. South Africa and becoming a finalist in the Mr. Universe competition. In addition to his athletic accomplishments, McCauley authored several books, sharing his insights on faith, leadership, and personal development.

His legacy as a servant leader who touched countless lives will continue to resonate across communities in South Africa and beyond. Ray McCauley’s passing marks the end of an era for the Rhema Bible Church, but his profound impact on the Christian community will endure.
