Rethabile Khumalo’s promise to mum!
SINGER and songwriter Rethabile Khumalo has shared her emotional journey following the passing of her mum, legendary musician Winnie Khumalo.
The 28-year-old artist from Protea Glen, Soweto, revealed her long-standing fear of losing her mum due to health issues in 2024.
Despite the immense pain, Rethabile is determined to honour her mum’s legacy by fulfilling her dreams and wishes.
Speaking to Daily Sun, the Umlilo hitmaker shared how she finds strength in the lessons her mum instilled in her.
“I’m just trying my best to be strong because she always taught me to stay strong no matter the situation. There’s nothing I can do to bring her back, though I wish I could. The least I can do is give her a beautiful send-off and carry on her legacy,” she said.
Rethabile described her mum as a guiding light in the music industry, teaching her invaluable lessons about the business side.
“My mom taught me to stay humble and navigate the music industry wisely. She showed me how to handle contracts, deal with promoters, and protect myself as an artist. She was my walking dictionary, and I’m forever grateful for everything she taught me,” she said.
Reflecting on her mother’s remarkable career, Rethabile expressed pride in Winnie Khumalo’s contributions to South African music.
“My mom’s work was incredible. She was a legend who worked with so many iconic artists. Now, she’s reunited with her best friend, Brenda Fassie. I’m sure they’re having fun wherever they are. I’m so proud of her,” she said.
Rethabile also opened up about the challenges she faced in 2024 as her mum battled recurring health issues.
“The whole of last year was tough. My mom was sick almost all the time, and even though she would recover, it was hard. We even had conversations about what to do if she passed away. I kept telling her she wasn’t going anywhere, but it happened. She’s gone. It’s tough,” said Rethabile.
Despite her grief, Rethabile is focused on ensuring her mother’s wishes are fulfilled.
“It’s about her wishes now. The day she passed, I promised her that I’d make her dreams come true. I told her I loved her, and she told me she loved me too. That gives me peace,” she said.
