Rest in Power, Queen: Remembering Phethani Mugodo

The community of Tembisa, Johannesburg, is mourning the tragic loss of Phethani Mugodo, a 28-year-old woman whose life was cruelly taken during a robbery on 25 February 2025.

A Life Cut Short
Phethani was on her way to work in the Umnonjaneni Section of Tembisa when she became the victim of a senseless act of violence. Reports indicate that she was robbed and fatally shot, leaving her loved ones and the community devastated. At this time, no arrests have been made, and her killers remain at large.

Her death is not just another statistic—it is a painful reminder of the ongoing crisis of gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide in South Africa.

A Call for Justice
Phethani was more than just a victim; she was a daughter, a friend, and a young woman with dreams and aspirations. Her death should not be in vain. We must stand together to demand justice, not only for Phethani but for every woman whose life has been stolen by violence.

We cannot allow this cycle of brutality to continue. It is time to declare GBV and femicide a national disaster and take urgent action to protect women and girls.
