Rest in peace Nigerian music icon Onyeka Onuenwu after a musical performance.
Veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress Ms. Onyeka Onwenu has reportedly passed away at the age of 72 after performing at an event in Banana Island, Lagos.
According to The Guardian Newspaper, Onwenu collapsed following her performance at the birthday celebration of Stella Okoli, the owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, and was later pronounced dead at a hospital in Victoria Island.
Born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, she began her music career in the 1980s, achieving significant acclaim with her debut album “For the Love of You” in 1981, as well as her hit song “One Love.”

Throughout her career, she has also made substantial contributions to Nollywood, acting in numerous films and receiving various awards for her work in both music and film. In addition to her artistic pursuits, Onwenu was active in politics, serving as the Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and later as the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development.
Her contributions to Nigerian culture earned her several accolades, including the National Honors of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011, solidifying her status as one of the country’s influential figures. As of now, her family has yet to confirm the news of her passing.
