Respected ZCC Music Group Says Farewell

ZCC’S most celebrated group, Wacha Mkhukhu Wachumlilo is celebrating 20 years in the music industry.

However, the milestone sadly also marks the end of their journey.

Founded in 2005 by the late Charles Nkosana Kodi and the late Lucas Mojeremane Xale, the group released its 14th album on Friday, 31 January to commemorate and celebrate two decades in the music scene.

The group’s producer, Sipho King K Kekana told Daily Sun this is no ordinary album.

He said in addition to the lead vocalists, 17-year-old Kago Molefe, Given Moganedi, and Paul Kgokane, the album features a stellar lineup of guest artists.

He added that music legends such as Simon Makgatholela, Paul K Kganyago, and Musa Mhlawuli joined the project to honour the group’s legacy.

“But that’s not all. The album pushes creative boundaries with the inclusion of legendary urban contemporary gospel artist, Kekeletso “Keke” Phoofolo,” he said.

He described the collaboration as the intersection of urban contemporary and traditional gospel.

“We wanted to give our audience something completely different from the norm while staying true to our traditional identity. What Keke, Paul K, and Kago did on Re Kgoeletsa Magodimong gives us exactly that. No one would have ever imagined Keke and mokhukhu together and the end product is out of this world,” he said.

Sipho said as part of their 20th anniversary celebrations, Wacha Mkhukhu Wachumlilo has planned a series of events, including the Wachumlilo Day of Prayer to bid farewell to their fans.

“It was a painful decision that we had to come to and I had long deliberations about this with other directors, but it has become really difficult to survive in this industry. As much as we would like to continue to record music, it’s hard to do without solid financial backing,” he said.

Producer and sound engineer, Thato “DiSkillz” Mampe stated: “For me, it’s the group’s willingness to try new things and I think they have made history. Working with them has always been a pleasure.”

With decades of experience, Thato has worked with groups such as Spirit of Praise and artists such as Dumi Mkokstad, Solly Mahlangu and Kabza De Small. He is also the producer of the recent hit song Vuselela, a collaboration with Imithandazo hitmaker Mthunzi.
