Background & Job Description
Port Elizabeth TVET College is inviting applications from dedicated individuals to join the institution as General Assistants (Cleaner/Groundsmen) on a fixed-term project contract. The successful candidates will support campus operations by ensuring a clean and well-maintained environment across the college’s campuses. These roles are essential for creating a hygienic and welcoming setting conducive to academic success.

The General Assistant positions are ideal for individuals looking to gain entry-level work experience in a public institution, with no previous experience required.

Tasks
The core duties and responsibilities of the General Assistant include:

Cleaning of offices, corridors, boardrooms, and elevators
Cleaning restrooms and general kitchens
Maintenance and cleaning of cleaning machines (e.g., microwaves, vacuum cleaners)
Reporting malfunctioning or broken cleaning equipment
Requesting replenishment of cleaning materials
Maintaining gardens and surrounding premises
Upkeep of gardening tools and landscaping equipment
Supporting ad hoc facility maintenance duties as required

Qualifications

ABET Certificate / Standard 8 / Grade 10
Basic understanding of hygiene practices and safety protocols
Familiarity with repetitive task execution
Awareness of storage and facilities maintenance practices

Experience

No prior work experience is required
Training may be provided on-the-job to familiarize successful applicants with college procedures and safety measures
