Police swooped in to arrest a 54-year-old live-in domestic worker after her boss, Ashmika Seeripath was found dead in her home.

The incident happened Umzinto, a town in KZN.

Police suspect that suffocation might have been the cause of Seeripath’s death.

Lieutenant-colonel Nqobile Gwala, the SAPS spokesperson, said: “A case of murder is being investigated by the SAPS Umzinto branch. It is alleged that on July 7, around midday, men possessing firearms gained entry into the home in Kadville Heights and demanded cash.

“The body of the 42-year-old woman was found lying at the side of a bed. It is suspected that the victim was suffocated.”

Gwala confirmed that the domestic worker was arrested and was expected to appear in the Umzinto Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.

According to Shamilla Sookraj, the ward 12 councillor in the Umdoni Municipality, Seeripath’s body was found in a bedroom, between two beds.

“Ashmika had been living with her mum, Rani Seeripath, her sister’s child and the domestic worker.

“The domestic worker called Ashmika’s mum (Rani) around midday while she had been travelling with a businessman – stating that she could not find her daughter.

“They immediately drove to the home. They looked for Ashmika and found her lying unconscious between beds in the room.”

Sookraj said they then alerted the police and it seemed that Seeripath had been smothered, and nothing was taken from the home.

“When I got the call, I was unsure what to make of it, so I went to the house. The mum had been taking Ashmika’s death badly,” said Sookraj who also spoke about the spike in crime in the area.

“Things have gone bad in our town of Umzinto. Crime is getting out of hand. Housebreakings, theft and drug-related issues are common,” said Sookraj.

The Seeripath family declined to comment when approached.
