Pietermaritzburg Accident Leaves Over 20 Injured
Major Traffic Disruptions on the N3
KwaZulu-Natal’s roads were severely impacted on Friday morning after three major accidents occurred on the N3 near Ashburton. The collisions led to significant traffic congestion, multiple injuries, and instances of looting.
Injuries and Road Closures
Emergency services confirmed that at least 20 people sustained injuries in the crashes, which temporarily forced road closures and caused heavy traffic delays. The first two accidents involved trucks, while the third saw multiple cars and taxis colliding.
Looting Amidst Chaos
Mi7 Security Services reported that looters took advantage of the situation by stealing goods from a Coca-Cola truck that had been involved in one of the crashes. This incident highlights ongoing concerns about opportunistic crime during major road incidents.
Government’s Response
Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma expressed deep concern over the increasing number of accidents, particularly in wet conditions. He urged motorists to remain patient and exercise caution, especially along the affected section of the N3.
Duma also emphasized the urgent need to shift large cargo transportation from roads to rail networks, citing the high frequency of truck accidents on major highways such as the N3 and N2.
Warnings from Authorities
Midlands EMS Operations Director Roland Robertson advised drivers to exercise extreme caution, as continuous rain had left the roads dangerously slippery. He warned that driving conditions remained hazardous and urged motorists to remain vigilant.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) had issued a warning on Thursday about widespread showers and thunderstorms across KwaZulu-Natal. The wet conditions likely played a role in the accidents.
Safety Precautions for Motorists
Authorities are urging drivers to reduce their speed, increase following distances, and remain alert as recovery operations continue. Law enforcement and emergency responders are working to clear the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow.
The series of crashes on the N3 underscores the dangers of adverse weather conditions and the need for stricter safety measures on South Africa’s highways. Motorists are encouraged to stay informed about weather updates and road conditions to prevent further incidents.
