PICS: ‘Dlozi visit’ shakes kasi school
CHAOS strikes kasi school.
This after several pupils at Kamvalethu High School in Langa, Cape Town started fainting in their classrooms on Thursday afternoon, 30 January.
Teachers struggled to contain the situation as it appeared contagious.
“The kids were in a trance. It’s like they were possessed, so it was difficult to restrain them because while you were helping one, another would start. It was chaotic, and we ended up calling community members to help us because some of the kids who were in trance wanted to run out of the schoolyard,” said a teacher who spoke to the SunTeam.

Community members came and prayed, but it didn’t help.
Neziswa Bunxu, a vendor who operates near the school, was one of the people who went inside the schoolyard to assist.
“At first, I heard screams from the school and wondered what was going on. When I checked through the fence, I saw a teacher chasing a learner, trying to grab her. Then I saw two other learners who looked possessed coming out of the classroom and falling on the ground. I ran to assist them, but more learners started coming out,” said Neziswa.
Some parents quickly went to the schoolyard and collected their kids, fearing the worst.
Precious Magutshwa (44) said she had to fetch her grade 11 daughter after hearing about the incident.
“I got the information from the school’s WhatsApp group and quickly rushed to the school since I was not at work that day. I had no choice but to fetch my daughter since this thing was affecting mostly girls in higher grades,” she said.
Sangoma Lonwabo Mqungwana (60) from Mbekweni, outside Cape Town said it’s possible the ancestors visited a pupil while at school.
“If someone with the sangoma calling starts to manifest, those who also have undiscovered callings can respond to her. Just like in church, when one speaks in tongues, others who can also speak in tongues respond.”
“Parents of those who were possessed need to follow up and find out if their children have callings. If they have callings, they must help them accordingly so that the ancestors don’t visit the child while at school,” said Mqungwana.
Bronagh Hammond, the spokeswoman for the Western Cape Department of Education, said they’re aware of the incident.
“I can confirm that learners at the school reported feeling faint or ill, following an alleged spiritual/ancestral calling or sighting. Paramedics were on the scene and assisted the affected learners. The situation calmed down. Parents of the affected learners were called and collected their children,” said Hammond.
She also said that the school was not closed because of the incident on Friday, 31 January, adding that teaching and learning continued as normal.
