In Joburg, sites like Westpark Cemetery and Olifantsvlei Cemetery are experiencing challenges due to continuous rain, resulting in mud, unstable graves and a concerning appearance of sunken graves.
Communities are advised to regularly inspect gravesites for water damage or instability and visitors should stick to designated paths to avoid further damage.
City of Joburg Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has expressed concerns over residents conducting rituals in river streams, advising them to avoid these areas and prevent drowning. EMS spokesman Robert Mulaudzi stressed the danger posed by the rising water levels.
Funeral Industry Reformed Association chairman Johan Rousseau also raised ecological concerns, pointing out that inadequate environmental studies before establishing cemeteries site might lead to health risks such as airborne diseases or water contamination.
Mobile water pumps are suggested for removing excess water where drainage is insufficient, emphasising regular maintenance during rainy seasons to ensure safety for visitors.
Rousseau invited the authorities to collaborate with his organisation to address these issues, reinforcing the importance of proactive measures in preserving the integrity and safety of cemeteries.
