GBV activist Botlhale Modisane – who is from the Tshegofatso Pule Foundation and a close friend to the 57-year-old actor Patrick Shai has shared the actor’s last days with a local publication.

Modisane told the publication that the actor was misunderstood and that he passed away a broken man before he hanged himself in his garage at his home in Dobsonville, Soweto.

Modisane who worked with The River actor at the Tshegofatso Pule Foundation said Shai was troubled towards the end.

He tried to reach out to rapper Cassper Nyovest to explain the meaning behind the viral video and that he meant no harm.

Shai challenged the rapper to a boxing match and later apologized when things didn’t go to plan.

He apologized on social media but still wanted to speak to Nyovest personally.

According to Modisane Shai challenged the rapper to a match so that he can raise funds for anti-gbv organizations.

The Generations actor Patrick Shai together with Botlhlale Modisane and their colleagues had gone to the Johannesburg High Court to march ahead of the late Tshegofatso Pule’s hearing.

Tshegofatso is a South African woman who was murdered Nthuthuko Shoba when she was 8 months pregnant.

Pule’s body was discovered hanging from a tree in Roodepoort, Soweto in 2020.

The veteran was passionate about GBV issues in the country as he too was a former GBV perpetrator.

“He formed the Khuluma Ndonda Foundation and wanted Cassper to answer to the challenge so they can have a proper meeting.”

“He wanted to explain the context of the video that he shot to promote the boxing match.”

Patrick Shai’s son called his industry friend Sello Maake Ka-Ncube when he discovered his body hanging in his garage.

The veterans have been friends since they both shot to fame in Bophele ke Semphekgo, a popular 90s SABC Sepedi drama.

“I was called by his son to come to their house quickly and when I got there I could not believe what I saw.”

“Molefe Shai is no more. Motorola, as I used to fondly call him, and he would respond by saying Rakgolo, is but now a memory.”

“Motorola is one great thespian this country has ever produced.”

“My memory of him is his performances in the play Sophiatown.”

“I was inspired by it to strive to be in his league.”
