Nkanyiso Mchunu Detained on Suspicion of Drunk Driving
Former Uzalo and Muvhango actor Nkanyiso Mchunu faces potential fines or even jail time after being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
The 34-year-old, who portrays the prominent character Ndumiso on Mzansi Magic’s hit drama series My Brother’s Keeper, was apprehended earlier this week during a roadblock operation conducted by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) on 9 September in Randburg.
According to a police officer, who spoke to City Press on condition of anonymity as he is “not allowed to speak to the media”, Mchunu was found to be above the legal limit.

He said:
It was a routine operation in Randburg; he was stopped, we suspected that he was under the influence of alcohol and we asked him to step out of the vehicle so he could take a breathalyser test. It was then discovered that he was above the legal limit and he was then detained
Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo confirmed the arrest and said that Mchunu was handed a R500 police bail.Another officer said Mchunu wanted to use his
celebrity status to avert arrest, but police insisted on detaining him.
Mchunu also had a cameo role on the SABC1 drama series Soul City, did a voice over for an Absa commercial and acted in a television advert for MTN.In 2019, he joined the cast of the e.tv soapie Imbewu: The Seed as Nkululeko, a troubled and mysterious stranger on the run from a dangerous past life he wants to keep hidden.
In early 2022, he revealed he’d left the show, posting on Facebook: “This is me signing out … Myself and Imbewu have decided to end our working relationship,” he wrote.He was subsequently replaced in the role by actor Kay Sibiya.
City Press reported in August 2023 the SABC presenter Samora Mangesi was arrested for a similar case in Johannesburg. He was also granted police bail of R500.Mchunu’s phone rang but went unanswered, and he did not respond to a written inquiry sent to him
