Mzansi, here’s a bursary opportunity!

THE Shoprite Group is offering an exciting opportunity for students.

Students with degrees in accounting, retail business management, supply chain and logistics, or biological and agricultural sciences are invited to apply.

The bursary provides financial assistance, tuition, housing, job offers, and access to the retailer’s Employee Wellness Programme, as well as a monthly grocery allowance.

Lindsey Joseph, head of group talent solutions, said: “As South Africa’s largest private employer and leading retailer, we recognise that a skilled and talented workforce is crucial for our long-term sustainability.”

Joseph said their bursary programme plays a crucial role in attracting top talent.

“We look forward to welcoming the next generation of professionals to our business and supporting their journey towards success.”

Mapaseka Mashabela, aged 27 and a resident of Mooiplaas, Tshwane, joined the group in 2021.

She received funding from the retailer for her advanced diploma in management and her diploma in retail business management from the Vaal University of Technology.

She started as a trainee manager and is now the manager of the fresh food for the Gauteng division.

“Education is the key to success, and this is the largest food retailer in Africa, so there are plenty of opportunities for growth,” says Mashabela.

Atlegang Mpa (24), from Joburg, joined the group in 2024 as a trainee accountant after the retailer funded her Bachelor of Accounting Science degree and postgraduate diploma in accounting from Wits University.

“I was looking for a bursary that would allow me to complete my articles outside of audit while offering strong support.

“The Shoprite Group’s bursary programme provided both the opportunities and the guidance I needed,” said Atlegang.

Shoprite funded more than 230 students through its bursary programme in the most recent fiscal year, investing R19 million, winning the Gradstar Students’ Choice Award and being named Employer of Choice.

Applications opened on 1 February, and eligible students are encouraged to apply.
