My disability doesn’t stop me from shining!
DJ Neno Makapa believes he can achieve anything he sets his mind to.
The 26-year-old from Mabopane, Tshwane, shared that his disability has never limited his potential.
DJ Neno lives with scoliosis, a sideways curvature of the spine.
Being a DJ holds significant meaning for Neno as it allows him to inspire others living with disabilities.
He strives to show them they’re capable of pursuing and accomplishing anything they aim for.
His mum passed away when he was young, and he was raised by his aunt.
“My background is fine, I’m living well. I started listening to deep house music in 2018 and learned how to deejay in 2022. A man named Mpako Modipa taught me, and I started getting gigs on Radio 2000 and Metro FM for exposure,” he said.
“Work is important to me. I want to inspire people with disabilities, letting them know they can succeed in life, if they believe in themselves and have the right support. Sky’s the limit.”
Neno said his disability has never been an obstacle.
“I take things as they come, accepting myself as I am. I overcame obstacles to prove to myself and others that anything is possible,” he said.
About his journey, he mentioned moments an interview by DJ Sbu at Radio 2000 and Tbo Touch at Metro FM.
“Meeting top DJs like Black Coffee and Kabila,” he said.
“Performing brings him joy. Seeing people enjoy my set and radio listeners appreciate my mixes makes me happy,” he said.
He is currently working on an EP expected to drop around September.
“I’ll be performing at Beehive Café in Mabopane on 5th April for my friend’s birthday celebration,” he said.
