My Brother’s Keeper Reaches Its Final Chapter
IT’S been a sad few months for viewers of My Brother’s Keeper.
They’ve been disappointed since Mzansi Magic announced that the show would be canned.
The mood has been the same on set, according to actress Hlengiwe Lushaba Madlala, who plays MaMchunu.
The filming wrapped up on Friday, 7 February.
The show starring Lindani Nkosi, Zola Nombona, Wiseman Mncube, Sdumo Mtshali and others was cancelled in November 2024.
The final episode is yet to be confirmed.
“We are heartbroken. It’s sad, especially if you feel like you’ve been doing good work and have been giving it your all. It’s rare that you find a group of artists who just pour their hearts into a story. The crew as well, I’ve never seen such a hardworking crew.
“But there was also a lot of gratitude because we have found family. That, for me, is the biggest blessing. I walk away with brothers and sisters whom we’ll continue being in touch with,” she told Daily Sun.

Her character, MaMchunu, is one of the most loved characters on TV at the moment.
“Oh, my word, it’s an interesting space to navigate, especially because I’ve been doing this for a long time, and with just one role, there’s a lot of traction. It’s humbling when I come across mothers and people whose stories haven’t been told on TV.
“The story of mum, I don’t remember seeing a character that focuses on the journey of a mum from beginning to end and the complexities of being a mum. It’s been beautiful getting appreciation from mums and older women. They feel seen through this character. For me, that’s beautiful. It overwhelms and humbles me,” she said.
Hlengiwe revealed that she was still dealing with the loss herself.
“We are all grieving. I’m not going to lie. For me, there are moments when I feel I’m fine. Sometimes, I feel overcome with emotion, and I know I’m not the only one. I know the community that’s watching also feels the same way.
“We wrapped on Friday. I wasn’t there. I wrapped it a little bit earlier. I communicated with the cast. It was sad,” Hlengiwe said.
The actress said she’s working on herself while she waits for the next role.
“I don’t know where to next. It’s God who orders our footsteps. There hasn’t been anything yet. I’m hoping and trusting something beautiful will open. MaMchunu sat like a glove. I hope to experience more of that in the future. I’m open to beautiful roles that tell beautiful stories about our people.
“But at the moment, the homework is important. The work after the work – how you debrief, how you reflect on what happened, how you come back to your family life. I’m a mum and wife. I need to see how I come back to that in my fullness without interruption,” she added.
