‘Muvhango not cancelled’: SABC has yet to renew the contract
“Muvhango not cancelled. The SABC2 soapie has not been cancelled, “Phil Mphela said, giving an update on the drama series’ future.
Muvhango is making headlines after close sources revealed that the SABC 2’s most-watched drama series was not cancelled, as several tabloids alleged. The drama series hogged headlines against its rumoured cancellation.
SABC YET TO RENEW MUVHANGO’S CONTRACT
It seemingly aired its last episode on 2 July 2024. Against the episode, the drama series seemingly confirmed that it had ended but did not reveal whether it was the end of season 25 or the drama series. Taking to X, Muvhango posted, “End of the Road for Muvhango; thank you for watching all these years.”
With Mzansi still trying to connect the dots about Muvhango’s future entertainment blogger, Phil Mphela gave an update on the drama series’ future. He revealed that the drama series was still waiting for the public broadcaster’s nod after the season 25 finale.
Mphela went on to confirm that the production had to shut down due to delays in the contract for the new season. The entertainment blogger posted, “Muvhango not cancelled. The SABC2 soapie has not been cancelled, and I can confirm that the show is still in talks with the broadcaster.”
“As I reported, the production had to shut down due to delays on the contract for the new season. This is a developing situation, and I will share it when it is finalised. But, by all accounts, the show will continue,” he added.
However, this is not the first time Muvhango has had similar woes and cancellation rumours. Despite Muvhango’s contract renewal being in limbo, Mphela made it known that this was a developing situation. However, he said the drama series would continue despite the setbacks.
SABC 2’S LONG-RUNNING SOAPIE
However, against the trends, SABC and Muvhango have yet to shed more light on the drama series’ future. Episode 130 of season 25 was Muvhango’s last episode, and SABC has been playing old episodes since then on its timeslot.
The drama series has thrust several stars into the limelight and has had its fair share of controversy. Some celebrated stars who had their shot at stardom thanks to the show include Gabriel Temudzani and Macdonald Ndou.
Muvhango is a Tshivenda drama series created by Duma Ndlovu and produced by Word of Mouth. It first aired in April 1997 and is one of the most-watched soaps in South Africa.
However, it has had a decline in viewership over the years. It had a single slot per week, but its newfound fame earned it five episodes a week. The drama series has been airing for 27 years.
