**Fallen Soldier’s Family Calls for Swift Action**

The Moagi family from Sekororo, Limpopo, is pleading with the South African Defence Force (SANDF) to expedite the process of repatriating the bodies of nine soldiers killed in action in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Among the fallen soldiers was 29-year-old Louis Calvin Moagi, who tragically lost his life during a confrontation with the M23 rebel group on Friday, 24 January 2025.

**A Community Hero Lost**

Speaking to *Daily Sun*, family spokesperson Selemela Moagi expressed the family’s deep pain and urgency to bring Louis’s remains home for a dignified funeral. Describing him as a beacon of hope and a role model in their community, Selemela highlighted Louis’s selflessness and dedication to his family.

Louis joined the SANDF in 2018 and had become a key provider for his family. “We last saw Calvin in January 2024 when he was deployed from Mozambique to the DRC. He was a role model to every child in our community and the breadwinner for our household. He leaves behind a three-year-old child, and the family is heartbroken,” said Selemela.

**A Family Left in Uncertainty**

The loss of Louis has left his family in despair, with his younger siblings’ futures now uncertain. Louis had stepped into the role of a father figure after the passing of his own father. His sister, 18-year-old Keabetswe Moagi, who recently passed matric, was depending on him to fund her tertiary education.

“Louis carried a lot on his shoulders. He ensured his siblings had hope for a better future. His mother, Molobedu Moagi, is inconsolable, and we are all struggling to cope with this loss,” Selemela shared.

**Call for Government Action**

The Moagi family has criticized the government for delays in repatriating the soldiers’ bodies and called for the withdrawal of South African troops from the DRC due to the escalating violence. “The fighting in the region has intensified, and it’s evident that our soldiers are not safe. The government needs to act swiftly to prioritize their safety and ensure families like ours don’t suffer this pain,” added Selemela.

**Defence Committee Responds**

On Sunday, 26 January, the Joint Committee on Defence issued a statement addressing the incident. Co-chairman Phiroane Phala emphasized the need for thorough communication from Defence Minister Angie Motshekga and SANDF leadership. “It’s critical that we receive a comprehensive briefing, not only on the incident but also on the resources available to SANDF members deployed in the DRC,” said Phala.

**A Plea for Closure**

As the Moagi family awaits updates, their pain is compounded by the uncertainty of when Louis’s body will return home. The family hopes the government will act quickly to ensure they can lay their beloved son to rest and honor his memory.
