Minister: The Music World Mourns Winnie Khumalo and Doc Shebeleza’s Early Departure
MINISTER visits families of late iconic musicians.
Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie visited the families of the late Winnie Khumalo and Victor “Doc Shebeleza” Bogopane on Friday, 17 January.
Speaking to Daily Sun, McKenzie revealed that although his official duties were set to begin on Monday, 20 January, news of Winnie and Doc Shebeleza’s passing compelled him to return to work immediately.
“I met with the families and shared some laughs with them. Despite the tragic circumstances, we spoke about lighter topics like fashion, which was close to Winnie’s mother’s heart. It gave me great joy to see them smile, even briefly, during such a difficult time,” he said.
McKenzie emphasised the importance of honouring the legacies of these legendary figures who left an indelible mark on Mzansi’s music industry.
He disclosed that his office offered financial assistance to both families to help them with funeral arrangements.

“The chief of staff spoke to the families to understand their needs. Both families expressed gratitude for the support they received,” he said.
Reflecting on the loss, McKenzie lamented the timing of their passing, especially as he envisions a brighter future for the arts industry.
“Winnie and Doc Shebeleza left us when the industry was on the brink of transformation. They left us at the wrong time just when the industry is about to flourish. It’s heartbreaking to lose such icons at a time when things are about to change for the better. If it were possible, these are the kinds of deaths we would have postponed,” he said.
McKenzie also highlighted the selfless nature of the two artists, noting that they always prioritised helping others despite their own challenges.
“These were not just artists, they were selfless individuals who cared deeply for their peers. Even when they were struggling, they made it their mission to uplift others. It’s as though God has a unique sense of humour, calling home those who gave so much of themselves. Their passing is a tremendous loss, not just to their families, but to the entire creative community,” he said.
