About the Opportunity
Marine Engineer Officer – Transnet NPA Transnet National Ports Authority (Transnet NPA) is currently seeking a qualified and skilled Marine Engineer Officer to join its dynamic Vessel Maintenance Division based in Durban. This is a prime opportunity to become part of one of South Africa’s most strategic state-owned enterprises, responsible for managing the country’s key ports infrastructure and maritime operations. As a Marine Engineer Officer, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring optimal operational performance of the vessel engine room and related equipment.
What You’ll Be Doing
As a Marine Engineer Officer, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the engine room and all mechanical systems on board the vessel. Your daily duties will revolve around engine monitoring, planned maintenance, and responding to breakdowns to maintain vessel readiness and compliance with safety standards. You will also assist in training junior staff and keeping operational logs accurate and up to date.
Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting engine room watchkeeping duties by monitoring temperature, pressure, and other critical readings
- Starting up plant and machinery and monitoring warm-through processes
- Executing work as outlined in the planned maintenance schedule
- Responding to machinery breakdowns efficiently
- Recording engine hours and maintaining the logbook with precision
- Training and mentoring subordinate crew members
- Managing and documenting stock movements in the spares book
- Inspecting and maintaining all safety equipment
- Handling the transfer of fuel and ballast
Who Should Apply?
This position is ideally suited for experienced marine engineers who are passionate about the maritime industry, eager to uphold high safety and maintenance standards, and capable of working in a live-on-board vessel environment on a 12/24-hour, 14-day rotational basis.
Requirements (write it as it is)
- Grade 12 or N4
- Apprenticeship or cadetship – 30 months
- Certificate of competency as Engineer Officer issued in terms of the Merchant Shipping Act – 12 months sea time
- Work environment: Lives on board the vessel for a stipulated period of time on a 12/24 hours, 14-day shift basis
- At least 6 to 12 month’s experience as a MEO
