Mam’Mkhize’s Royal AM fights for 27 mitha lifeline!
REALITY TV star Shauwn “Mam’Mkhize” Mkhize’s soccer team, Royal AM FC, managed to endure the termination of a sponsorship deal worth millions.
However, challenges continue to persist.
The Pietermaritzburg High Court is expected to decide whether Mam’Mkhize’s club deserves the R27 million sponsorship from the Msunduzi Municipality in Pietermaritzburg, KZN Midlands.
The hearing is scheduled for 28 February.
On Wednesday, 29 January, Mam’Mkhize’s club narrowly escaped a motion proposed by the Democratic Alliance (DA) calling for the municipality to reassess and terminate their R27 million sponsorship.
Municipal speaker Eunice Majola decided to address the matter confidentially since it had already been brought to court by the DA in 2024.
The DA argued that the municipality should sever its ties with Mam’Mkhize.
The party said it’s inappropriate to support a business embroiled in serious legal issues, including allegations of tax evasion.
They DA emphasised that non-compliance with tax laws and intentional tax evasion are criminal offences that should be taken seriously by any municipal authority.
Mam’Mkhize is currently involved in SARS scandals, leading to numerous property raids and her soccer team being placed under SARS curatorship.
DA councillor in Msunduzi, Reggie Khanyile, told Daily Sun that this is not the end of the issue, as the matter will be revisited in court next month.
“That was the reason they didn’t table the motion because we also brought the matter to court in March 2024.
“We are very positive about our case in court because we will be arguing in court after that, and should we win the case, which is something we are positive that we will win in court if there is any money paid, all councillors who voted in favour of the sponsorship will be personally accountable,” he said.
Khanyile said they were trying to save the day by submitting the motion to deal with the motion, and immediately when they dealt with the motion, there was no need to proceed to court.
“Because they didn’t want to deal with the motion obviously, we are happy to go to court,” he said.
Msunduzi municipal spokeswoman Nontobeko Ngcobo told Daily Sun that the municipality council dealt with the matter confidentiality.
Attempts to get Mam’Mkhize for a comment were unsuccessful.
