Lusikisiki SAPS K9 Unit Recovers Bodies of Two Drowned Boys in Mthatha Dam

The Lusikisiki SAPS K9 Search and Rescue Unit successfully recovered the bodies of two 12-year-old boys who tragically drowned in Mthatha Dam. The incident occurred on Sunday, 23 February 2025, at approximately 14:00.

Tragic Drowning Incident
The two boys, both from Matyeba Locality, were swimming in the dam along with a group of children when they disappeared underwater. Their sudden disappearance prompted immediate concern, and authorities were alerted to the distressing situation.

Search and Rescue Operation
Following the alert, the Mthatha K9 Unit launched a search operation. However, due to poor visibility in the dam, initial efforts to locate the children were unsuccessful. As a result, the Lusikisiki K9 Search and Rescue Unit took over the mission the following day, on Monday, 24 February 2025.

Sergeants Makhosonke and Nduva, both highly trained members of the K9 Search and Rescue team, resumed the search despite the difficult conditions. Their determination and expertise led to the successful retrieval of the boys’ bodies from the deep and murky waters of Mthatha Dam.

Community Recognition and Police Commendation
The OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Modishana, praised the dedication and commitment of the search and rescue team. He commended Sergeants Makhosonke and Nduva for their tireless efforts in recovering the victims and providing closure to their grieving families.

“When duty calls, police officers must rise to the occasion, no matter the circumstances. The commitment displayed by these members reflects the very essence of our duty to serve and protect,” said Major General Modishana.

A Reminder of Water Safety Awareness
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of swimming in unsupervised or hazardous waters. Authorities continue to urge parents and guardians to educate children about water safety and the risks associated with swimming in deep and unpredictable water bodies.

The loss of these young lives has deeply impacted the local community, with many expressing their sorrow and support for the bereaved families. Local officials have also emphasized the importance of vigilance and caution around water to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Conclusion
The successful recovery operation by the Lusikisiki SAPS K9 Search and Rescue Unit highlights the dedication of law enforcement officers in serving their communities. Despite the challenges faced during the search, their relentless efforts ensured that the victims’ families could find some closure.

As the community mourns the tragic loss of the two boys, the incident stands as a stark reminder of the importance of water safety awareness and the vital role of police search and rescue teams in responding to emergencies.
