Late Mgqumeni’s kids desperately need help
LATE maskandi star Mgqumeni “Idlamanzi” Khumalo’s kids need help to repair their iconic dad’s car.
Mgqumeni, who was known for his new age maskandi music and sharp dressing, passed away in December 2009.
Three months later, his iconic Toyota KZTE 4×4 double cab bakkie, marked with his nickname “Idlamanzi” at the back, was involved in an accident in 2010. It has remained parked in the backyard for 15 years.
Mgqumeni’s kids have expressed that they do not have the financial means to fix the car and have now appealed to the public for fundraising support. They believe repairing the car will help preserve their dad’s legacy and retain the memory symbolised by the name “Idlamanzi” written on it.
Mgqumeni’s son, Smiselo Khumalo (24), told Daily Sun that their dad’s bakkie is the only physical memory they have, and they wish to keep it fix it to honour him.
“My father had 10 kids. Unfortunately, he died while we were still young. Now, we have grown, but we still don’t have the income to help us fix this car. It pains us to see it parked in the backyard for so long without being able to do anything, which is why we’ve asked for the public’s help,” said Smiselo.

Simiselo said when the car is repaired and running, they plan to use it as transport in the Nquthu rural areas in KZN, where bakkies are often hired due to gravel roads.
“Hiring it out will help us maintain it and ensure it doesn’t end up parked in the backyard again,” he said.
Another son, Lusanda Khumalo, said it has been painful to see their dad’s car parked in the backyard year after year.
“After Smiselo posted about it on Facebook, many fans volunteered to donate to help repair it. We are thrilled that the car is about to be fixed and be back on the road again with the help of music lovers,” he said.
Mgqumeni was regarded as the king of maskandi music for his unique talent, original tunes, and distinct guitar playing. He had numerous bands, including Mgqumeni, AmaGcokama, Abakwethu, Idlamanzi, Ogezo, and more, each showcasing different musical styles.
His music has influenced many maskandi artists, such as Khuzani Mpungose and Mthandeni. Manqele had also won several awards, including Samas.
