South African Kwaito music legend Victor Bogopane, widely known as Doc Shebeleza, tragically passed away on Thursday, 9 January 2025. The 51-year-old artist, beloved for his contributions to South African music and his philanthropic endeavors, leaves behind a legacy that continues to inspire. Here are five key facts about the late star.

## Doc Shebeleza’s Passing
Doc Shebeleza’s manager, Shakes Mavundla, confirmed his passing, revealing that the star died on Thursday morning at around 10:30 a.m. This came just days after being discharged from a Johannesburg hospital on Monday.

The Kwaito star had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) following a surgical procedure in December 2024. While the surgery was initially successful, Doc Shebeleza experienced ongoing health challenges. In an interview with *Times Live* two weeks after the operation, he expressed optimism about his recovery and thanked fans for their support and prayers.

“I’m feeling much better, abuti [my brother], and I’m well. Everyone around me is happy with my progress,” he shared.

Doc Shebeleza also battled health issues in June 2024, marking a difficult period for the legendary musician.

Doc Shebeleza became a household name in 1996 with the release of his debut album, *S’Kumfete*. The album’s success marked the beginning of a prolific career in the South African Kwaito music scene.

Beyond his debut, the star released three more popular albums: *Tiger* (1997), *Ebumnandini* (2000), and *Jiva Yoyo* (2001). His music remains iconic and reflective of the vibrant Kwaito genre.

3. **Formation of Amaskumfete**
In the 1990s, Doc Shebeleza founded Amaskumfete, an all-male music group that further solidified his presence in the industry. The group played a significant role in promoting Kwaito music during its peak.

In his later years, Doc Shebeleza devoted himself to uplifting fellow artists. Through his organization Amaha, he worked tirelessly to support and empower creatives in the South African entertainment industry.
