‘He deserves his flowers’: Matthews Rantsoma finally bids farewell to Scandal!

In a significant turn of events for fans of the beloved South African soapie Scandal!, Mathews Rantsoma, who captured hearts as Nhlamulo Maseko, has announced his departure from the show. Known for his endearing lingo and relatable character, Mathews’ exit marks the end of an era for viewers who have followed his journey since his introduction in 2021.

Mathews, a talented actor hailing from Thembisa in Ekurhuleni, quickly rose to prominence thanks to his portrayal of Nhlamulo—a kind-hearted kasi forex trader often dubbed the “kasi Shakespeare.” His character resonated with youth culture, embodying a loving and fearless spirit that led him on daring adventures, making him a favorite among female fans of the show. His charming narrative and relatable dilemmas created a loyal following that eagerly tuned in to watch his every move.

In a formal statement released on May 14, 2024, the show’s production team confirmed that Mathews would be leaving Scandal! at the end of July, 2024. The announcement followed a wave of departures from the show, with other notable stars such as Sello Maake-KaNcube, Nomvelo Makhanya, Lusanda Mbane, Howza Mosese, and Patrick Mofokeng also waving goodbye to their roles

Reflecting on Mathews’ decision, the production team stated, “Mathews approached us to advise that he would like to pursue other ventures. We support his decision and have agreed to release him.” This sentiment highlights the collaborative spirit within the industry, with actors encouraged to follow their passions even if it means leaving cherished roles behind.

Nhlamulo’s storyline was both captivating and tumultuous. The character faced heart-wrenching challenges, including the tragic revelation that Larona was not his biological daughter, resulting in emotional turmoil. His narrative arc culminated in a complex relationship with Vuvu, played by Mamarumo Marokane, as their honeymoon turned tense with Nhlamulo’s desire to reconnect with Larona, ultimately leading to his exit from the show.

Outside of his notable television presence, Mathews boasts an impressive portfolio of theater work, having participated in numerous productions, including the acclaimed Ngale Kwendlu in 2018. This background showcases his versatility as an artist, making his departure from Scandal! an exciting opportunity for him to pursue new roles and creative endeavors.

As fans bid farewell to Mathews Rantsoma and his unforgettable character, Nhlamulo, they are left with a mixture of nostalgia and hope for the journeys that lie ahead—for both the character and the actor. While Scandal! will undoubtedly miss his charm, one can only look forward to seeing what new adventures Mathews will embark upon in the entertainment world.
