Gospel singer helps save marriages

GOSPEL singer Mmatema Gavu is on a mission to help save marriages.

She and her husband, Tshepo Gavu, will host a marriage conference called Young, Married & Fabulous on 28 February at The Fortress Venue in Edenvale, Ekurhuleni.

The 32-year-old Kgosi Ya Rena hitmaker spoke to Daily Sun about the event.

“It was inspired by my love for family and marriage. I really respect and honor the institution, or rather the gift, that I believe God created for us. With that said, I have always been a fan of learning and growing while having fun.

“When God gave me the idea, He wanted me to incorporate everything I believe in into one evening. Basically, one night with couples, combining learning, entertainment, and conversations,” she said.

The singer said they decided to try something new this year and have a panel discussion.

“At the event, we let our hair down. It’s an evening to relax and have great conversations. We’re here to learn and work on our marriages in a fun and relaxed way. So, people can expect a night of fun, great food, and live music. We usually have comedians and DJs too.

“However, this time around, we’re having a panel discussion because instead of just listening to a presentation, we thought about actually having a conversation and letting people participate in these life-changing discussions. Let’s talk about what you and your husband feel,” she said.

Mmatema said people learn something new every year at the event.

“I believe it’s very important to attend such events because you can always learn from someone. We don’t always have everything figured out, and just being with another couple, you’ll learn something new. Like, some people don’t do public displays of affection because they think it’s a ‘White-people thing’. But when you’re with other couples, you’ll see that’s not true. It’s just an opportunity to explore. Plus, there will be experts on stage. My husband isn’t always a fan of seminars, but this time, the moment we planned it, he liked it. He thought it was cool that people who share one thing in common – marriage – get to hang out and have fun,” she said.

She also revealed they’ve received positive feedback about past events.

“We’ve had testimonies from attendees saying that although they did date nights and outings, that particular evening left them mind-blown and opened their marriage to more possibilities. Another couple went home and conceived their child that night.

“But some couples arrive reserved and learn it’s okay to be affectionate in public. We’ll also have a sex therapist again, which changes couples’ bedroom activities,” she said.
