Gogo Maweni’s court trouble drags on!
SANGOMA Gogo Maweni, whose real name is Makhotso Mofokeng, appeared in the Protea Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 11 February.
The controversial sangoma and businesswoman wore black-and-white trousers and a top.
Maweni (38) seemed calm and composed as she entered the courtroom, smiling despite the serious nature of the case.
This follows the court granting her R5 000 bail. Proceedings were brief, and the case was postponed to 12 March for trial.
The case against the controversial sangoma is set for trial, with Magistrate Rozelle Khiye noting the matter has been moved to court 16.
Despite the gravity of the matter, Maweni seemed unfazed, continuing to smile and appeared confident while the magistrate outlined the future course.
Maweni faces charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, stemming from a 2019 incident.
The allegations have attracted considerable attention, partly due to Maweni’s status as a well-known and somewhat controversial public figure.
During her earlier court appearance, some shocking details emerged, revealing Maweni hadn’t disclosed several prior serious criminal charges, including a fraud conviction and a charge of drunk and negligent driving.
This failure to disclose crucial information led Magistrate Khiye to add further charges for providing false evidence to the court, compounding Maweni’s legal woes.
As part of her bail conditions, Maweni was instructed not to intimidate the complainant and also required to surrender her passport.
During her previous appearance, the courtroom was full of sangomas supporting Maweni. Their presence was a strong show of solidarity, as Maweni is a significant figure within the spiritual and cultural community.
Despite the ongoing legal drama, Gogo Maweni remained composed and confident throughout the hearing, even smiling as the case was postponed.
