Gayton McKenzie Slammed After Tribute to Nandi Nyembe
Soweto, South Africa – Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture Gayton McKenzie is facing intense criticism following his tribute to veteran actress Nandi Nyembe, who passed away at 75 on Saturday evening after her health deteriorated. McKenzie announced her passing on X, calling her a “treasured icon” in a heartfelt message: “It is with profound sorrow that the Nyembe Family, together with the National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, announce the passing of one of South Africa’s most treasured icons of the arts, Mam’ Nandi Nyembe.”
However, the minister faced significant backlash on X, with users accusing him and his department of failing to support Nyembe during her lifetime. Comments ranged from @Kanani_mfundo’s claim that McKenzie prioritized sports over arts, leaving veteran actors struggling, to @Kusegamede’s pointed question: “Not long ago she expressed her dire need, did you help her?” Others, like @classic546, labeled him a “clout chaser” for his tribute, alleging he failed to provide meaningful support.
According to Sunday World, McKenzie had pledged to visit Nyembe in Soweto and donated R20,000 from his personal funds to assist with her health and financial struggles, but he reportedly did not follow through on his promise to visit. The lack of consistent support has fueled accusations that the minister and his department neglected the veteran actress during her time of need, amplifying the public’s frustration.
