From diagnosis to recovery: Lalla Hirayama on the importance of regular pap smears
Lalla Hirayama aims to raise awareness and encourage women to prioritise their reproductive health. In a courageous and eye-opening Instagram post, the media personality shared a deeply personal experience, shedding light on the importance of cervical health and regular pap smears.
A pap test (or cervical smear test) is when a doctor or nurse collects cells from the cervix to check on its health.
Lalla revealed that during her recent visit to a doctor, an impromptu examination resulted in her being diagnosed with grade 3 cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN3).
“I know this could have been a private thing, maybe something to be embarrassed about. But I choose not to be — I wanted to share. Perhaps this may help someone,” she wrote.
“Even though I am very focused on polycystic ovary syndrome and hormonal health, I was not as focused on cervical health. I knew I needed to have a regular pap smear but not entirely sure why and how it worked.
“I was diagnosed with CIN3 and it was scary. But I’m on the other side and my biopsy results are good. A few large lesions but the margins where they were cut and burnt were good, so in six months I’ll need to test to make double sure.”
Lalla said though she is a believer in natural medicine, she is equally grateful for modern medicine and the role it plays.
“I’m glad doc was so comforting, expressing how important surgery was but also allaying my fears.”
