“Former Pirates Star Steps In During Crisis”
THIS soccer legend has a good heart.
Former Moroka Swallows and Orlando Pirates midfielder and striker, Steve Sekano, made a heartwarming contribution to underprivileged pupils at Ipolokeng Primary School in Diepkloof, Soweto on Wednesday, 19 February.
Sekano, through his self-titled charitable organisation, the Steve Sekano Foundation, donated school uniforms to more than 50 disadvantaged pupils, helping them prepare for the 2025 academic year.
Founded in 2017, the Steve Sekano Foundation has been dedicated to humanitarian work, with this recent donation marking one of its many initiatives to support local communities.
Speaking to Daily Sun, Sekano shared that his giving spirit was inspired by his early career at Pirates.
“Back then, I used to live off donations from Buccaneers fans because I didn’t earn a salary,” Sekano said.
His humble beginnings have motivated him to give back to those in need.
“The Steve Sekano Foundation visited today with a mission to make a difference in a child’s life. We want our children to come to school with confidence. They need to understand that they’re here to learn and that their efforts today will help them become someone important tomorrow,” he said.
Sekano emphasised the importance of giving back to communities and making a positive impact on those in need.

“My long-term goal for this foundation is to secure enough sponsors who understand the importance of giving back. I want to collaborate with people who recognise the struggles faced by South Africans, not just at schools, but also in old age homes and communities at large,” said Sekano.
Ipolokeng deputy principal Francina Kamana expressed her sincere gratitude towards the foundation for its support and highlighted the positive impact it has had on the pupils.
“Today has had a positive impact on us. As you can see, it’s a very cold day, and it’s raining. Those who don’t have shoes had to stay at home. Even on sunny days, they’ve been mocked by other pupils. However, today, they can feel comfortable coming to school, looking presentable and not feeling judged,” she said.
The pupils expressed their excitement and enthusiasm at the opportunity to see the legendary footballers in person and also to receive gifts from him.
A pupil said: “We were truly excited to meet the football legends and really appreciate that they took the time to visit us. We are also incredibly grateful for the donations we received. Now, some will be able to come to school and learn along with us and never be left out.”
