Find out what caused Connie Chiume’s death.

The South African entertainment industry has recently been cast into deep mourning following the unfortunate passing of multi-award-winning actress Connie Chiume at the age of 72. On Tuesday, August 6, 2024, Chiume breathed her last at Garden City Hospital after a period of illness, as confirmed by her family in a heartfelt statement released on social media the following day.

In their message, Chiume’s family expressed their gratitude towards the medical staff who provided exceptional care, highlighting the profound appreciation her children feel for the support their mother received in her final days. They also promised to share details of her memorial and funeral services on her official social media platforms, allowing fans and loved ones to pay their respects.

Connie Chiume was a trailblazer in the South African television landscape, known for her compelling performances in notable productions such as e.tv’s “Rhythm City,” SABC’s “Zone 14,” and “Soul City.” Most recently, she captivated audiences with her role in the highly popular Mzansi Magic soapie “Gomora.” Her talent extended beyond South African borders, as she graced the international film scene with her role alongside Lupita Nyong’o in the culturally significant movie “Black Panther.”

Lupita Nyong’o poignantly remarked, “We have lost a library! May Connie Chiume rest in peace and power,” encapsulating the idea that Chiume’s wealth of knowledge, experience, and talent was a valuable resource in the industry.

TV personality Minnie Dlamini shared her memories of Chiume and underscored her influence: “Ulale ngokuthula Ma wami (Rest in peace, my mom). You told me to never stop fighting for this business and that when our kids decide to venture into our business, it’s better than when we did it!!! We will keep fighting in your name.” These sentiments reflect the deep respect and admiration Chiume inspired in the next generation of talent.

Sello Maake KaNcube, a fellow actor from “Skeem Saam,” also expressed his disbelief and sorrow, stating, “I still can’t believe you took your last sleep and checked out so soon.
