Eight Bodies Recovered After Vehicle Swept Away in Free State River

Tragic Discovery in Heilbron
Eight bodies were discovered in a stream in Heilbron, Free State, on Monday, March 3, following a devastating accident involving a vehicle that was swept away by strong river currents.

Vehicle Fails to Reach Its Destination
According to police reports, a bakkie carrying multiple passengers was traveling from Heilbron on the afternoon of Saturday, March 1. However, the vehicle never reached its intended destination on a farm in the Heilbron district. Concerned family members reported the occupants missing on the evening of Sunday, March 2.

Attempt to Cross Low-Water Bridge Turns Deadly
Captain Loraine Earle provided details on the tragic incident. She explained that the vehicle was traveling along the Welgeluk dirt road between two farms when the driver attempted to cross a low-water bridge known as Kliprivier. Unfortunately, the powerful river currents overwhelmed the vehicle, sweeping it away and leading to multiple fatalities.

Victims Include Entire Family
The deceased include a 71-year-old driver and his 62-year-old wife, along with their three grandchildren—two boys aged 10 and a 14-year-old girl. Also among the victims were a 34-year-old man, his 33-year-old wife, and their two-year-old daughter.

Search and Rescue Efforts
Upon receiving reports of the missing persons, police launched a search operation. A local farmer discovered the vehicle early Monday morning, prompting authorities to deploy Search and Rescue dogs, handlers, and police divers. After an extensive search, all eight bodies were retrieved from the water.

Authorities Warn Against Crossing Flooded Areas
Captain Earle urged the public to exercise extreme caution during heavy rains and to avoid crossing flooded roads, bridges, and rivers. She advised:

Do not attempt to drive or walk through fast-moving water. Even if the water appears shallow, its depth and strength can be misleading.
Find alternative routes. If a road or bridge is submerged, wait for water levels to recede before proceeding.
Prioritize safety. Flash floods can occur suddenly, making it crucial to avoid risky crossings.
Investigation Underway
Police have opened an inquest into the tragic incident and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident. The names of the deceased have not yet been released.

This heartbreaking event serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by flooded roads and rivers, especially during heavy rain seasons. Authorities continue to urge vigilance and responsible decision-making to prevent similar tragedies.
