Community Gathers to Remember Koketso Ramatlo at Heartfelt Memorial Service

On Thursday, 9 January, an emotional memorial service and candlelight vigil were held for Koketso Ramatlo (17) in Kekana Gardens, Hammanskraal, Tshwane. The tragedy left the community reeling as they gathered to honor the life of the young girl whose untimely death has left a void.

## Koketso’s Disappearance and Tragic Discovery

Koketso went missing on New Year’s Day, 1 January 2025. Her absence sparked concerns that were heartbreakingly confirmed on 3 January when her burnt, naked body was discovered outside her home by her grandfather, Peter Ramatlo (61). Speaking at the memorial, Peter expressed the deep pain and sorrow the family is enduring. “We are heartbroken,” he said. “The community has been supportive, but this loss is unbearable. Koketso always brought joy with her jokes.”

The family thanked mourners for their presence and support during this difficult time.

## Candlelight Vigil and Community Tributes

White candles were placed at the spot where Koketso’s body was found, symbolizing light and hope amidst the darkness. The vigil brought together family, friends, classmates from Lethamaga Secondary School, and local leaders to remember the vibrant teenager.

Leon Mukwevho, Tshwane North district education cluster leader, spoke of the loss: “A young soul has been taken too soon. Koketso was a bright, intelligent, and kind-hearted pupil who had great aspirations. Her passing has united us in grief.”

## Heartfelt Messages from Teachers and Friends

Lethamaga Secondary School principal, Kolobe Lebelo, shared the school’s grief, stating, “We saw Koketso as a light in our community. This is a devastating loss for all of us. We hope justice will prevail for her and her family.”

Her technology teacher, Nkhutlheleng Seboko, reflected on Koketso’s potential: “She was a student who worked hard to improve. Losing her is a painful reminder that every child is precious.”

Koketso’s friends and classmates shared their emotional tributes. Tshepiso Bucibu (17) recalled her friend’s humor and lively personality: “She loved to joke. I can’t imagine getting through a day without her.” Classmate Christina Manala (16) described Koketso as her best friend but was too emotional to speak further.

## Calls for Justice and Community Support

Sipho Baloyi, chairman of the school governing body, strongly condemned the brutal killing. “This was a senseless act of violence,” he stated. “We loved Koketso dearly and will remember her fondly.”

Local leaders also voiced their support for the grieving family. Ward 73 representative Meshack Lebese called the tragedy “a dark moment for the community,” while ActionSA councillor Thabang Sebotsane said, “This is heartbreaking for any family. We stand with Koketso’s loved ones in their time of need.”

## Final Farewell

Koketso will be laid to rest on Saturday, 11 January, at Kekana Gardens Cemetery. The community continues to demand justice for her untimely and tragic death.

This devastating loss serves as a reminder of the importance of unity and vigilance in addressing violence within communities.
