Background & Job Description

The City of Tshwane Municipality is recruiting General Workers (11 posts) to assist the wastewater maintenance team. This opportunity is open to all categories of applicants and provides an essential role in the sanitation and wastewater network management system of Pretoria. Successful candidates will contribute to the maintenance and repair of the sewer infrastructure by assisting with physical labor, operating equipment, and ensuring cleanliness and safety standards are met.

This position is ideal for individuals with a strong work ethic, basic literacy, and physical fitness, especially those who are willing to work shifts and perform manual labor in various environments.

Tasks

General Workers will be responsible for a variety of hands-on support functions, including:

Clearing sewer blockages using appropriate tools
Excavating and backfilling trenches with shovels, pickaxes, rakes, and rammers
Loading and unloading tools, materials, and equipment
Operating water pumping devices under supervision
Assisting with aligning and installing water pipe sections
Cleaning the work area post-repair
Cleaning and preparing tools and equipment
Washing and maintaining the plumber’s vehicle
Adhering to the Occupational Health and Safety Act requirements

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

Basic literacy skills
Ability to perform physical duties
Willingness to work under a structured routine
Must be physically fit and healthy, with no back problems
Must consent to a criminal record check, including fingerprinting through the Tshwane Metro Police Department at the candidate’s own cost
Must be willing and available for shifts, standby duties, and overtime when requested

Experience

While experience is not mandatory, relevant experience in general maintenance or working within a wastewater collection network will be an added advantage.
