Cape Town Taxi Boss Gunned Down in Broad Daylight

**Deadly Shooting Leaves Community in Shock**

A Cape Town taxi boss was brutally gunned down while visiting his mechanic in Philippi on Friday, 31 January. The tragic incident occurred at the corner of Emms Drive and Govan Mbeki Road, sending shockwaves through the local community.

**Attack in Broad Daylight**

According to witnesses, the victim had gone to check on his taxi, which was undergoing repairs at a local garage when gunmen launched a sudden and violent attack. Residents reported hearing at least ten gunshots from inside the open garage, leaving the taxi boss fatally wounded.

“We rushed to the scene after the shooting and found him lying on the ground,” said one resident. “He owned several taxis and a long-distance bus. It’s shocking how he was killed.”

Several witnesses, including garage workers, were present when the attack happened.

“We were spray-painting a car when the shots rang out,” said one worker. “I froze. It happened so fast, in less than a second. The shooters did their job and disappeared.”

### **Police Investigation Underway**

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that Nyanga police have opened a murder case.

“Officers responded to a shooting incident in Govan Mbeki Road, Brown’s Farm, where a 56-year-old man was shot multiple times and fatally wounded,” Twigg said.

“Reports indicate that the victim was enquiring about his minibus taxi when two unknown suspects ambushed him. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.”

Authorities suspect the attack was linked to ongoing taxi violence in the region. The assailants fled the scene and remain at large. Police are urging anyone with information to contact CrimeStop at 08600 10111.

### **Taxi Violence on the Rise**

This killing comes just weeks after police seized over 20 firearms at Nyanga Taxi Rank following a deadly shooting that claimed another life. The taxi industry in Cape Town has been plagued by violence, often driven by rivalries over routes and territory.

Local residents fear the violence could escalate, with taxi-related killings becoming increasingly common. Many hope that law enforcement will take stronger action to curb the bloodshed and bring those responsible to justice.
