Ayanda Ngobeni’s Memorial Service: Community Gathers to Honor His Memory
A memorial service for Ayanda Ngobeni was held on October 25, 2024, at the Church on the Hill, following a tragic shooting incident that claimed her life and that of her friend, 23-year-old Busisiwe Khumalo, on October 20. The two women were found deceased in a stationary BMW on the N4 highway near Middelburg, both victims of multiple gunshot wounds. They were returning to Mbombela after attending a Rebel Troops Bike Rally in eMalahleni.
Ngobeni was well-known in the local community, serving as the marketing director of the Liver Brothers Football Club and as deputy secretary of the City of Mbombela Marathon Club. Khumalo, an intern in Mbombela, was equally respected. Their untimely deaths have left a profound impact on friends, family, and the community.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, prompting an investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS). According to Colonel Donald Mdhluli, authorities discovered the vehicle with its hazard lights on and bullet holes visible. While the police found the car parked on the side of the road, the driver reportedly fled the scene unharmed. Investigators are currently pursuing leads, although no arrests have been made yet.
Ngobeni’s family has urged the public to refrain from spreading rumors and unfounded speculation regarding the case, emphasizing the need for respectful remembrance of their loved one. Her sister, Ziningi Nkuna, expressed the family’s devastation and appealed for any witnesses to come forward with information. She highlighted Ngobeni’s positive impact on those around her, describing her as a person who connected well with everyone.
The City of Mbombela Marathon Club released a statement mourning Ngobeni’s loss, describing her as the “heartbeat” of the organization. Thulani Mkhabela, the club’s chairperson, conveyed the collective sorrow within the road running community, asserting the belief that law enforcement will do their utmost to apprehend those responsible for the killings.
Ngobeni’s funeral is set for October 27 in Mayflower, where she will be laid to rest. Community members, including fellow motorcyclists, are expected to attend the service to honor her memory. The family has expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support they have received during this difficult time.
As investigations continue, the community is reminded to respect the process and allow the authorities to work without interference. Mdhluli has encouraged anyone with information regarding the incident to contact the SAPS hotline.
This tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the senseless violence that can disrupt lives and communities, highlighting the need for collective mourning and support for the families affected. Our deepest condolences go out to both the Ngobeni and Maphalala families during this incredibly difficult time.
